'Soul Of A Citizen' excerpt: taking money out of politics: a grassroots effort for clean elections
by Paul Rogat Loeb
Nothing makes us feel more powerless than the corruption of our democracy by money. It undermines progress on every issue we face. If America is ever to deal with our critical problems, we're going to need to sever the links between wealth and politics, a task made more challenging by the recent Supreme Court decision that overturned a hundred years of precedent to increase still further the influence of companies like Exxon, United Health and Goldman Sachs. The Maine Clean Elections model offers a powerful alternative model, one achievable even within the parameters of the ghastly Supreme Court decision. The story of how activist Alison Smith helped it pass also exemplifies how individuals can proceed into social involvement step by step:

John Yoo: a president can nuke the United States
by David Swanson
I had the opportunity to ask war lawyer John Yoo a couple of questions on Friday. The situation was not ideal, with someone else holding the microphone and deferring to the witness, and other people heckling, and other people shouting at the hecklers. Nonetheless . . .

WASHINGTON, DC: After an extensive audit and investigation of alleged improprieties at the USDA's National Organic Program, the agency's Office of Inspector General (OIG) made public their formal report, dated March 9, substantiating the allegations of prominent organic industry watchdog groups — that under the Bush administration, the USDA did an inadequate job of enforcing federal organic law.

Urgent Action Notice
Support the Coalition to Ban Ohio Dog Auctions
As the month of March unfolds we find ourselves looking forward to the many changes of spring. We witness warmer weather and disappearing snow drifts, spring break and the break out of shorts and sandals. Unfortunately for many Ohioans, there is one change that we are not seeing. Dog auctions, a spectacle banned in many states, continue to take place. Dog auctions function to trade breeding stock between puppy millers and act as a means for millers to dump unprofitable pups and females. These auctions take place every month in Farmerstown Ohio, drawing shady breeders from across the nation. The next Ohio dog auction is set for March 27th and expects over 300 dogs to be bartered off.

"Theater of Imagination"

Hector Aristizabal, a political activist and theater arts master from Medelllin, Colombia, will teach a daylong workshop called "Theater of Imagination." Hector comes from Medellin, Colombia and works all over the world using theater as a means to resist oppression, live without fear and build community. (He has helped lead for five years running, a massive demonstration against the School of the Americas, a center for teaching torture.) He draws on the techniques of Theater of the Oppressed, with its ability to inspire political activism, resolve conflicts and question authority. His work also invokes ritual -- the root of theater -- storytelling and drumming and his approach is imbued with a spirit of playfulness that is central to reawakening the imagination. As we search for new ways to create and sustain community and fight injustice, Hector uses spontaneous theater games that tap into the freedom within us.
